Cabo Verde hold Uruguay to remarkable 2-2 draw in Group H

Cabo Verde earned a memorable 2-2 draw against two-time champions Uruguay in the second round of Group H matches at the 2026 World Cup.

The tournament newcomers entered the match as clear underdogs, but took the lead in the 22nd minute when Kevin Pina struck a superb free kick beyond Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

Uruguay increased the pressure and equalized in the 44th minute through Maximiliano Araujo, who converted a rebound. Agustin Canobbio then scored before halftime to send Uruguay into the break with a 2-1 lead.

Cabo Verde refused to fade. In the 61st minute, Uruguay failed to deal with a dangerous attack after Muslera came off his line, allowing Varela to score the equalizer.

Neither side found a winner, leaving the final score at 2-2 and giving Cabo Verde another significant result in their first World Cup appearance.

After two rounds, Spain remained in control of Group H while Uruguay, Cabo Verde and Saudi Arabia entered the final matchday with qualification still at stake.
