Switzerland: 26 shots
Qatar's first World Cup point
Qatar produced one of the early surprises of the 2026 World Cup by holding Switzerland to a 1-1 draw in their Group B opener.
Switzerland controlled most of the match and created a heavy volume of chances, finishing with 26 shots. Breel Embolo put the Swiss ahead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute after Remo Freuler was brought down in the area.
Qatar stayed alive through a long spell of pressure, helped by a series of saves and missed Swiss chances. The heat and Switzerland's older starting lineup also became part of the late-match story as the tempo dropped.
The breakthrough for Qatar arrived in stoppage time. In the 94th minute, captain Boualem Khoukhi headed in a cross to level the match and rescue a point.
The draw gave Qatar its first point in World Cup history and left Group B wide open after the first round of matches.
